DESCRIPTION
Cefotec CV Dry Syrup (Cefpodoxime Proxetil 100 mg + Clavulanic Acid 62.50 mg) is a combination medication containing cefpodoxime and clavulanic acid. It is used in children to treat bacterial infections affecting the lungs, nose, throat, ears, skin, and urinary tract. This medication works by interfering with the formation of the bacterial cell wall, ultimately leading to the destruction of the bacteria. Cefotec CV Dry Syrup is not effective against infections caused by viruses.
INDICATION
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Cefpodoxime Proxetil: This is a prodrug that converts into its active form, cefpodoxime, after absorption. Cefpodoxime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in the bacterial cell wall, preventing the formation of cross-links in the peptidoglycan layer. This disruption weakens the cell wall, leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Clavulanic Acid: This is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Beta-lactamase enzymes produced by certain bacteria can inactivate many beta-lactam antibiotics, including cephalosporins, rendering them ineffective. Clavulanic acid binds to and inhibits these beta-lactamase enzymes, protecting cefpodoxime from degradation. This enhances the antibiotic's effectiveness against beta-lactamase-producing bacteria, extending its spectrum of activity and improving its ability to treat bacterial infections.
