CEFPODOXIME 20 MG DROP

DESCRIPTION

Cefotec Drop (Cefpodoxime 20 mg) is an oral antibiotic formulation commonly used to treat bacterial infections in children. It contains cefpodoxime, a third-generation cephalosporin, and is typically prescribed for infections like otitis media (middle ear infections), upper respiratory infections, and urinary tract infections. The drop form is often preferred for younger patients who may have difficulty swallowing tablets. The antibiotic works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial death. The dosage and duration of treatment depend on the type and severity of the infection, and it should be used as directed by a healthcare provider.

INDICATION 

• Bronchitis : Bronchitis is the inflammation and irritation of the bronchial tubes that carry air to the lungs. Cefotec Drop (Cefpodoxime 20 mg) is used to treat bronchitis caused by bacterial infections. It is also used to manage acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (long-term inflammation of the bronchi) and recurring episodes of bronchitis. 

• Community-Acquired Pneumonia :  Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) refers to pneumonia contracted outside of a hospital setting. CAP can be caused by bacterial or viral infections. Cefotec Drop (Cefpodoxime 20 mg) is used to treat CAP caused by bacteria such as Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae.

• Sinusitis : Sinusitis is the inflammation of the linings of the nose and surrounding sinuses, often caused by bacteria, though it can also be due to viruses or fungi. Symptoms may include a blocked nose and pain or pressure behind the eyes, nose, cheeks, or forehead. Cefotec Drop (Cefpodoxime 20 mg) is used to treat bacterial sinusitis and typically provides relief within three to eight weeks.
   

• Pharyngitis/tonsillitis :  Pharyngitis and Tonsillitis are commonly caused by viral or bacterial infections, leading to symptoms such as sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and fever. When both the throat and tonsils are affected, the condition is termed pharyngotonsillitis. Cefotec Drop (Cefpodoxime 20 mg) is an antibiotic used to treat these infections, particularly when caused by bacteria such as Streptococcus. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, helping to reduce inflammation and eliminate the infection. However, it is important to complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed to prevent antibiotic resistance and ensure effective treatment.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Cefpodoxime 20 mg : Cefotec Drop (Cefpodoxime 20 mg) functions by targeting and inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located in the bacterial cell wall, specifically inhibiting the enzyme transpeptidase. This enzyme is crucial for the cross-linking of peptidoglycan layers, which provides structural integrity to the bacterial cell wall. By blocking transpeptidase, cefpodoxime disrupts the normal formation of the cell wall, leading to a weakened and unstable structure. As a result, the compromised cell wall cannot maintain the necessary cellular integrity, causing the bacteria to undergo lysis and ultimately leading to their death. This mechanism effectively eliminates the bacterial infection by preventing the bacteria from maintaining their cell wall structure and function.

PREACUTION
