MECHANISM OF ACTION

Nitrofurantoin 100 mg works by inhibiting bacterial enzymes, which convert it into highly reactive intermediates inside the bacterial cells. These intermediates attack and damage critical components of the bacteria, including DNA, RNA, proteins, and cell walls, leading to bacterial cell death. Nitrofurantoin is particularly effective in the urinary tract, as it is rapidly excreted into the urine, allowing it to concentrate at the site of infection. Its action is bactericidal at therapeutic doses, meaning it kills the bacteria rather than just inhibiting their growth. This mechanism makes it especially useful for treating urinary tract infections.
