DESCRIPTION
Glipotec-MP2 Tablet (Glimepiride 2 mg + Pioglitazone Hcl 15 mg + Metformin Hcl 500 mg (ER) belongs to a class of medicines called anti-diabetic drugs used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, especially in patients whose blood sugar levels are not controlled by diet and exercise alone. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic (long-lasting) condition that affects the way our body processes glucose. People with type 2 diabetes either do not produce enough insulin or the insulin produced is unable to perform its function in the body (insulin resistance).
INDICATION
Type II Diabetes Mellitus : Glipotec-MP2 Tablet (Glimepiride 2 mg + Pioglitazone Hcl 15 mg + Metformin Hcl 500 mg (ER) is used along with an appropriate diet and exercise regimen to reduce blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. Glipotec-MP2 Tablet (Glimepiride 2 mg + Pioglitazone Hcl 15 mg + Metformin Hcl 500 mg (ER) is a medicine that helps to control high blood glucose (sugar) levels. It helps get rid of extra glucose from your body through urine. It also improves the body response to the hormone insulin, which is responsible for regulating blood glucose (sugar) levels in our body.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Glimepiride is a sulfonylurea that stimulates the pancreas to release insulin by binding to specific receptors on pancreatic beta cells. This leads to increased insulin secretion, helping to lower blood glucose levels.
Pioglitazone is a thiazolidinedione that enhances insulin sensitivity by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-γ) in adipose tissue, muscle, and liver. This activation increases the transcription of insulin-responsive genes, improving the body's response to insulin, enhancing glucose uptake in peripheral tissues, and reducing hepatic glucose output.
Metformin is a biguanide that primarily decreases hepatic glucose production and improves insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues by activating AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which plays a role in cellular energy homeostasis. It lowers blood glucose levels by reducing hepatic gluconeogenesis and enhancing peripheral glucose uptake, without increasing insulin secretion.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Drug-Drug Interaction: Glipotec-MP2 Tablet (Glimepiride 2 mg + Pioglitazone Hcl 15 mg + Metformin Hcl 500 mg (ER) may have interaction with other antidiabetic drugs (insulin, sitagliptin, empagliflozin), water pill (furosemide), antithyroid drugs (levothyroxine), anticonvulsant (pregabalin).
Drug-Food Interaction: Glipotec-MP2 Tablet (Glimepiride 2 mg + Pioglitazone Hcl 15 mg + Metformin Hcl 500 mg (ER) may interact with alcohol. Therefore, avoid the consumption of alcohol with Glipotec-MP2 Tablet as it may increase the risk of lactic acidosis (accumulation of lactic acid in the body).
Drug-Disease Interaction: If you have bladder cancer, uncontrolled diabetes, lactic acidosis, diabetic ketoacidosis (accumulation of ketone bodies in the blood), or eye problems caused by diabetes, liver, kidney, or heart problems, inform your doctor before takingGlipotec-MP2 Tablet (Glimepiride 2 mg + Pioglitazone Hcl 15 mg + Metformin Hcl 500 mg (ER) .
PRECAUTION
When using Glipotec-MP2 Tablet (Glimepiride 2 mg + Pioglitazone Hcl 15 mg + Metformin Hcl 500 mg (ER) for type 2 diabetes, monitor blood glucose levels to manage potential hypoglycemia, especially during initial treatment or dose adjustments with Glimepiride. Be aware that Pioglitazone can cause fluid retention and exacerbate heart failure symptoms, so watch for rapid weight gain and shortness of breath. Metformin requires cautious use in patients with impaired renal function to avoid lactic acidosis, and liver function should be periodically assessed due to potential effects from both Pioglitazone and Metformin. Additionally, manage potential drug interactions, address any adverse effects such as gastrointestinal discomfort or vitamin deficiencies, and maintain regular follow-up appointments to ensure treatment efficacy and safety.
