DISCRIPTION
Jecal Softegel Capsules are a combination of three medicines: Calcitriol , Calcium Carbonate and Zinc Sulfate which treat low blood calcium levels. Calcitriol helps your body effectively absorb Calcium Carbonate and additionally supports the muscles needed to avoid falls. Calcium Carbonate and Zinc Sulfate help build and maintain bones. It treats various conditions caused by low calcium levels in the body, such as osteoporosis (weak and brittle bones), osteomalacia/rickets (weak bones), hypoparathyroidism (abnormal production of parathyroid hormone), and latent tetany (a muscle disease with low blood calcium levels).
INDICATION
• Renal Osteodystrophy : Renal Osteodystrophy is a skeletal abnormality characterized by low levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood due to kidney failure. This condition mainly occurs due to chronic kidney disease (CKD) where the kidney does not function properly. Jecal Softgel Capsule is used in treating Renal osteodystrophy.
• Hypoparathyroidism : Hypoparathyroidism is a condition of low levels of parathyroid hormone (an important hormone that maintains a balance of calcium and phosphorus). This condition may lead to decreased calcium levels and increased phosphorus levels in the blood. Jecal Softgel Capsule is used in the treatment of Hypoparathyroidism.
• Secondary Hyperparathyroidism : Secondary hyperparathyroidism is a condition with excessive secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH) in response to low blood levels of calcium in the body. This condition mainly occurs due to severe kidney failure resulting in vitamin D deficiency. Jecal Softgel Capsule is used in the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism, thereby helping in maintaining the normal secretion of PTH.
• Postmenopausal osteoporosis : Postmenopausal osteoporosis (Type I osteoporosis) is a bone condition that occurs after menopause. This condition occurs due to decreased estrogen levels leading to bone disorders. Jecal is used in the treatment Postmenopausal osteoporosis.
• Hypocalcemia : Hypocalcemia is a condition with low levels of calcium in blood or plasma. This mainly occurs due to kidney problems, Vitamin D deficiency, etc. Jecal is used in the treatment of hypocalcemia, thereby preventing the risk of bone disorders in the future.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
• Calcitriol: Calcitriol is the active form of vitamin D3. It enhances calcium and phosphate absorption from the gastrointestinal tract and promotes the reabsorption of calcium in the kidneys. This helps maintain proper levels of calcium and phosphate in the blood, which are crucial for healthy bone formation and maintenance.
• Calcium Carbonate: Calcium carbonate is a calcium supplement that provides essential calcium needed for bone formation and maintenance. It helps prevent or treat calcium deficiency, ensuring that there is sufficient calcium available in the body for various physiological functions, including bone mineralization.
• Calcium: The additional calcium in the formulation further ensures that the body's calcium needs are met, supporting bone health and preventing conditions like osteoporosis and hypocalcemia (low blood calcium levels).
• Zinc: Zinc is an essential trace element that plays a vital role in bone metabolism and the immune system. It contributes to the formation of bone matrix and aids in the repair and growth of tissues. Zinc also supports the activity of osteoblasts, which are cells responsible for bone formation.
DRUG INTERACTIONS
Drug-Drug Interactions: Jecal capsules may interact with anti-cancer medication (estramustine), Cholestyramine (cholesterol-lowering agent), Digitalis (used to treat heart problems), medicines to treat bacterial infections such as Ciprofloxacin, Levofloxacin, Gatifloxacin, Sparfloxacin, Ofloxacin; Ketoconazole (treat fungal infections).
Drug-Food Interactions: Avoid or reduce the intake of caffeine, soft drinks, and alcohol that inhibit calcium absorption.
Drug-Disease Interactions: Inform your doctor if you have myeloma, bone metastases, primary hyperparathyroidism, Nephrolithiasis/nephrocalcinosis., Renal failure, or Hypervitaminosis D.
COMMON SIDE EFFECTS OF JECAL CAPSULE
PRECAUTIONS
Jecal capsule combines ingredients for bone health but has some precautions. Talk to your doctor before taking it, especially if you have kidney issues, heart problems, or high calcium levels. It's also important to consult your doctor if you're pregnant or breastfeeding or take other medications. They may monitor your calcium levels and advise on potential side effects like constipation or nausea. Be aware of serious side effects like confusion or bone pain and tell your doctor right away if you experience them. Lastly, the extra 200mg of calcium listing might be redundant, and remember to take it with food for better absorption.
