INDICATION
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Opet Tablet (Pantoprazole 40 mg) is a proton pump inhibitor that reduces stomach acid by targeting and irreversibly binding to the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme in the parietal cells of the stomach lining. By blocking this enzyme, pantoprazole inhibits the final step in acid production, effectively lowering stomach acidity. This reduction in acid helps treat conditions such as GERD, peptic ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. The drug’s effects last for 24 to 48 hours, as it remains active until new proton pumps are synthesized, making it suitable for once-daily dosing.
Drug-Drug Interaction: Opet Tablet (Pantoprazole 40 mg) may interact with a blood thinner (clopidogrel, warfarin), antifungal (ketoconazole, voriconazole, itraconazole, posaconazole), anti-HIV drug (atazanavir, nelfinavir), iron supplements, antibiotic (ampicillin, rifampicin), heart medicine (digoxin) and anti-cancer drug (methotrexate). Let your doctor know if you are taking these medicines.
Drug-Food Interaction: Opet Tablet (Pantoprazole 40 mg) interacts with St John's wort plant that is used as an anti-depressant. This plant may affect the working of Pantoprazole. So avoid its intake with Opet Tablet (Pantoprazole 40 mg).
Drug-Disease Interaction: Opet Tablet (Pantoprazole 40 mg) should not be given in patients with Clostridium difficile-induced colitis, liver disease, bone fractures, low Vitamin B12 (anaemia), and low magnesium (hypomagnesemia).
PRECAUTIONS
When taking Pantoprazole 40 mg, use caution if you have a history of liver disease, as it may require dosage adjustment. Long-term use can lead to a risk of vitamin B12 deficiency, bone fractures, and magnesium depletion, so monitoring may be necessary. It may also mask symptoms of serious conditions like gastric cancer, so persistent symptoms should be evaluated. Avoid using it with medications like warfarin without medical advice, as interactions may occur. Additionally, abrupt discontinuation can lead to acid rebound, so tapering off under a doctor's guidance is recommended.
